Douvikas’ yia-yia, Sophia, was 27 years old when she came to the United States in 1956 as the bride of 60-year-old George Douvikas. In 1968, George Douvikas died in a fire, and Sophia moved the family to California, invited by an elderly couple she’d met on the boat to America. “They knew each other for only 14 days, then 12 years later, they helped her buy a house and find a job as a housekeeper at Mills Memorial Hospital,” Douvikas’ father said, still amazed at the couple’s generosity. “My mom never backed away from anything. Here she was, a person with only a fourth-grade education — through her, I couldn’t have lived a better life.”.
