Titled “Director’s Choice,” it’s the same program performed on the troupe’s inaugural European tour. In a phone interview from Pamplona, company artistic director José Manuel Carreño explained that he wants to show off his dancers’ broad stylistic range. “Everything was chosen based on the concept of what I wanted to bring to Europe, from the most classical pieces to the most contemporary. (In Spain), we’re beginning with a classical pas de deux, jumping to Jorma Elo’s ‘Glow-Stop,’ which is neoclassical, then ‘Prism’ by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, another neoclassical piece but danced to jazz music. We close the evening with Ohad Naharin’s ‘Minus 16,’ which is very contemporary.”.

Based on a careful assessment of our abilities, Stephanie ended up choreographing a waltz-ish dance for the recital where the daughters did a lot of impressive twirling and the dads basically shuffled along with them from one position to the next. After two more months of rehearsals, we were cleared to perform. The recital went well. The daughters were resplendent in their floor-length Southern belle hoop skirts. The dads were starched and unnatural in their vested Southern-style tuxedos. As far as I know, none of the dads fell, cried or soiled their tuxedos in any of the three performances. In fact, some said we were the hit of the recital, but I think they were just being nice. No way were we as entertaining as the little boy with his arm in a cast, hamming it up in the Hawaiian dance.

The dancer comes full circle with this book, capturing the glitter of a lifetime of “Nutcrackers” for the next generation. “Every ballet dancer started off as a mouse or an angel and dreamed of being the Nutcracker or Marie and as I get older I find I enjoy watching that journey more and more,” says Hineline. “I love what it means for the whole community. It’s a great family show.”. Contact Karen D’Souza at 408-271-3772. Read her at www.mercurynews.com/karen-dsouza, and follow her at Twitter.com/karendsouza4.
